SETTING QUESTION FOR MISS HULS' NOVEL STUDY GROUPS

BY FRIDAY YOU NEED TO HAVE RESPONDED TO THIS QUESTION AS A GROUP (ONE OF YOU CAN TYPE). MAKE SURE YOUR RESPONSE IS WELL THOUGHT OUT, MAKES SENSE AND IS WRITTEN PROPERLY. USE EXAMPLES FROM THE TEXT.

"How does the writer create the atmosphere
for the setting?
Are there any particular words that help to create this atmosphere?"

ATMOSPHERE IS THE FEELING, EMOTION OR MOOD THE WRITER SHOWS THE READER THROUGH THE DESCRIPTION OF SETTING AND OBJECTS.
TIP: If the setting of your novel has changed, choose the setting that has been most dominant in what you have read so far e.g. home life, and describe the atmosphere for that part.

  1. At the beginning of the novel, the ATMOSPHERE in Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson is quite sad and dismal because Jess and his family live in poverty. His Mum and Dad get very stressed as it is a very hard to live life when there is a big family living in a small house with little money. Mum complains about not having enough money and Jess has to run in bare feet because he doesn't have running shoes.

  3. At the beginning of A Series of unfortunate Events, there is an atmosphere of sadness, mystery and action, as the Boudelaire children's parents die when their mansion burns down, so they are shipped off to live with an unknown relative who's house is a pig sty. There was only one bed, one of the children had to sleep on the floor and one on a lumpy mattress.

  4. The Butterfly lion group
Our atmosphere is worried at the beginning.
When Bertie the main character wanted to keep the lion and his dad said NO then his mum stood up for Bertie and the lion cub and said " he will not have any more brothers or sisters so please let him keep the cub". Bertie was standing listening to the conversation he was very worried that his father would not let him keep the cub.
